Alpharetta, Georgia is a city located in northern Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Alpharetta's population was 57,551. The estimated population in 2019 was 67,213.
Alpharetta was named after Lady Arabella Dorman (née Corbin), the wife of Milton S. Hershey who had founded Hershey Chocolate Company in Pennsylvania. Hershey developed the town of Hershey Park as a resort for people to visit and stay at his farm. Eventually, he sold his farm and turned it into a tourist attraction called Hersheypark.
In 1957, the town of Milton was incorporated as a city and renamed Alpharetta to avoid confusion with Milton Borough in Pennsylvania. The name "Alpharetta" is a combination of "Lady Arabella" and "-etta", which means "little" in Italian and Latin respectively.
The city's name is a portmanteau for Alice and Paris, two historical figures important to the development of Fulton County. Alice was a young woman who was murdered by her lover who then committed suicide; Paris was an early settler from Tennessee whose name gives rise to several local landmarks including Parrish Avenue which runs through downtown Alpharetta.
Alpharetta has an elevation of 346 m above sea level and covers an area of 70 km2 (27 sq mi). As of the 2010 Census, there were 57,551 people living in Alpharetta.
