The city was created 118 years ago in 1907.

Edinburg is a city located in the Rio Grande Valley in deep South Texas. With a population of over 100,000, Edinburg serves as the county seat for Hidalgo County.

History

The town was founded in 1908 and was named after John Young Chapin, a land developer from Edinburgh, Scotland. The name was later changed to Edinburg to more closely match the Scottish spelling.

Edinburg was mainly an agricultural community up until the 1920s. The introduction of irrigation systems allowed the region to grow into a major producer of citrus fruit, cotton, sugarcane, and other crops.

Economy and Education

Today, Edinburg has a diverse economy. Key industries include agriculture, trade, healthcare, education, and government services. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and South Texas College both have campuses located in Edinburg. These colleges help supply an educated workforce for the city and surrounding region.
