Baltimore played an important role in the American Revolution as it was the site of the First Continental Congress in 1774. During the War of 1812, the British attacked Baltimore and the bombardment of Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which later became the national anthem.
In the 19th century, Baltimore grew rapidly as an industrial hub, especially for rail transport and shipping. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was the first chartered passenger rail line in America in 1827. By the Civil War, Baltimore was the second leading port of entry for immigrants after New York City.
Modern Day Baltimore
Today, Baltimore’s economy is diverse with major industries in trade, finance, services, manufacturing, tourism, and biomedicine. The city is home to renowned institutions like Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins University.
While Baltimore has vibrant cultural attractions like the National Aquarium and historic Inner Harbor, the city continues to grapple with issues of crime, poverty, and racial tensions. Major riots occurred in Baltimore in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and again in 2015 following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody.
Local Cuisine and Sports Culture
Baltimore is known for its unique local food dishes like steamed blue crabs, crab cakes, pit beef and the Baltimore chicken box. The city takes pride in its sports teams like the Baltimore Ravens (NFL), Baltimore Orioles (MLB) and the Baltimore Blast (MASL).
