The city was created 145 years ago in 1880.
Abilene is a city located in Taylor and Jones counties in central west Texas. With a population of over 125,000, it is the principal city in the Abilene metropolitan area.
History
Abilene began as a frontier outpost in 1881, becoming a rail stop on the Texas & Pacific line as cattle and other goods were transported east. Large stockyards fueled the city's emergence as a ranching center.
In the 1920s, Abilene became home to several prominent Christian universities. It later blossomed with oil discoveries and diversified economy around education, healthcare and agriculture.

Today Abilene has a diverse economy anchored by education, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Major employers are the three local universities: Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University, and McMurry University.
Other big employers are Hendrick Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, and Abilene ISD. Dyess Air Force Base also boosts the local economy.
