Abilene: The third most populous city in Taylor County, Texas. It is located in the north-central part of the state. Abilene is known for its many military bases, its many parks and green spaces, and its many attractions, such as the Abilene Zoo and the Abilene Christian University.


Abilene is a city located in the county of Taylor in the U.S. state of Texas. Its population at the 2010 census was 117,063 and a population density of 403 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 124,407 inhabitants.

The city was created 143 years ago in 1880.

Abilene is a city located in Taylor and Jones counties in central west Texas. With a population of over 125,000, it is the principal city in the Abilene metropolitan area.


Abilene began as a frontier outpost in 1881, becoming a rail stop on the Texas & Pacific line as cattle and other goods were transported east. Large stockyards fueled the city's emergence as a ranching center.

In the 1920s, Abilene became home to several prominent Christian universities. It later blossomed with oil discoveries and diversified economy around education, healthcare and agriculture.


Today Abilene has a diverse economy anchored by education, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Major employers are the three local universities: Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University, and McMurry University.

Other big employers are Hendrick Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, and Abilene ISD. Dyess Air Force Base also boosts the local economy.


Visitors can learn about Abilene’s cowboy heritage at sites like the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum, Frontier Texas! museum, and Paramount Theater.
