Gadsden, Alabama, is a city in Etowah County and the county seat. The city is located on the Coosa River about 56 miles northeast of Birmingham and 90 miles southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is the primary city of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 103,931.
Gadsden was founded in 1828. It was named for Colonel James Gadsden, who was instrumental in creating it and who served as Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson. He also served as United States Ambassador to Mexico from 1853 to 1856.
