History
Early history
The area was originally inhabited by Apache and Comanche Native American tribes. In 1876, the Texas legislature established Andrews County from lands formerly assigned to Tom Green County. However, the county was not organized until 1911 due to a lack of settlements in the area.
20th century growth
The population of Andrews County grew rapidly following the discovery of oil in 1929. The first oil well was drilled in the Shafter Lake area and created a boom that attracted workers and businesses to the county. Andrews became an oil boom town, with businesses and housing constructed to accommodate the growth.
