History of Valdosta
Valdosta was founded in 1860 when the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad was built through the plantation of William S. Holt. It was chartered as a town in 1861.
The city's name comes from the Val d'Osta estate owned by one of Holt's grandfathers. Valdosta quickly became a hub for the cotton industry and commercial activity.
