Tempe is a city located in the county of Maricopa in the U.S. state of Arizona. Its population at the 2010 census was 161,719. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 200,402 inhabitants.
The city was created 144 years ago in 1878.
Tempe is a city just east of Phoenix, in Arizona. Its striking Tempe Center for the Arts hosts concerts, dance and comedy shows. Nearby, Tempe Town Lake is dotted with kayaks, pedal boats and paddleboards. Tempe Beach Park hosts outdoor festivals. Rising above the city, Hayden Butte is a mountain dotted with centuries-old rock art. Sporting events and concerts are held at Wells Fargo Arena.
Tempe is known as the "Millennial Mecca" because of its large population of young adults (45% of residents are under 35), who enjoy its urban vibe and proximity to Phoenix. The city has an active nightlife that includes many bars and restaurants along Mill Avenue near ASU's campus. The area also has many businesses that cater to students, including retail stores like Urban Outfitters and Starbucks Coffee Company as well as office space for start-ups and tech companies like Insight Global or Netflix Inc..

The area also has an active arts scene, with two performing arts centers: the Tempe Center for the Arts and Gammage Auditorium. The latter hosts popular musical acts from around the world and offers one of the best acoustics in America for jazz performances.
The city has several museums that showcase local history and culture, including Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), which features rotating exhibits by famous artists such as Andy Warhol; Museum of Natural History & Science; ASU Art Museum; Temporary Contemporary; and DeGrazia Gallery at ASU Art
