The area was originally home to the Rockaway Native American tribe before being developed in the 19th century. History of Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill was first developed in the 1840s when a series of homes and mansions were built on the hills overlooking Jamaica and the other developing areas of Queens and Brooklyn. The area was sparsely populated until the late 19th century when railroads and streetcars made the neighborhood more accessible.

The name "Richmond Hill" comes from the hilltop views of Staten Island's Richmond County. Much of the original 19th century architecture and mansions have been preserved in the neighborhood. Historic districts contain Victorian homes and Tudor revival architecture.
