The city was founded as a strategic location to prevent any invasion from the north by either side during the American Civil War. It is located 21 miles south of Richmond, along Interstate 95, and straddles the Appomattox River. The city's major transportation routes include Interstate Highways 85 and 95, U.S. Highways 301 and 360, and State Routes 3 and 156.
Petersburg is known for its historic sites and museums, including Fort Branch Park and Museum at Petersburg National Battlefield Park. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants downtown to choose from—great places to grab lunch or dinner before heading out for a day trip to some nearby attractions like Colonial Williamsburg.
