New Mexico is a state in the Southwestern United States. It is one of the Mountain States of the southern Rocky Mountains, sharing the Four Corners region of the western U.S. with Utah, Colorado, and Arizona.
It has an area of 315,194 square kilometers (121,816 sq mi), making it the fifth-largest state by area in the United States and larger than Uruguay.
New Mexico is bordered by Colorado to the east; Texas to the south; Oklahoma to the west; Arizona to the northwest; and California to the north and east (with which it shares an international border).
The state's name comes from Mexica (Aztec) Nuevo México (literally "New Mexico"), after New Spain. Its capital is Santa Fe, while its largest city is Albuquerque.
Spanish explorers obtained permission from Guachama Indians in 1540–1542 to settle on their lands temporarily while seeking gold and silver mines and wealth in them. The search for wealth took them into present day New Mexico where they found none but found native people that welcomed them with open arms. The Spaniards traded with these natives for
New Mexico was admitted as a state on January 6th 1912 and is home to 2.2 million people (2020). Its capital is Santa Fe and its current governor is Michelle Lujan Grisham (Democratic Party).
