Ironville is a city located in the county of Boyd in the U.S. state of Kentucky.
Ironville is an unincorporated community located along the Red River in Powel County, Kentucky. It was founded in around 1837 as an iron and timber production center.
The community was named for the nearby iron furnaces and mills that utilized the region's natural iron ore, timber and water resources. For several decades, iron production drove the local economy.
However, as iron production declined in the late 1800s, Ironville transitioned to a primarily agricultural economy up through the mid-1900s. Today, not much industry remains in this small town.
According to Census data, Ironville had a population of less than 200 as of 2010. It is centered around KY-213 in a rugged, forested valley.
While Ironville is small in size, residents say it has a strong sense of community. Neighbors look out for one another. The area has several churches, some small shops, and an elementary school.
Natural outdoor recreation, like hiking, fishing and hunting, is popular in the surrounding wooded hills and along the Red River. Ironville offers a quiet country lifestyle amid beautiful mountain scenery.
Ironville contains two attractions listed on the National Register of Historic Places:
- Ruins of the Hannah Furnace Ironworks which dates back to around 1850
- The historic Cope House built in 1895, which is now a private residence
These sites provide a glimpse into Ironville's Industrial Revolution past and importance in Kentucky's early iron production legacy.
While just a small rural town today, Ironville played an interesting role in Kentucky's early iron and timber industries. It provides a peaceful country setting with some historic sites that recognize its roots in iron production.
