The city was created 178 years ago in 1847.
The area was originally inhabited by the Onondaga nation. Early European settlers established the village of Syracuse in 1825, which was centered around salt production. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825, connecting Syracuse to major eastern cities and boosting its commercial prominence.
Syracuse was incorporated as a city in 1847. It became a major hub for the abolitionist movement, earning it the nickname "The City of Genuine Freedom." After the Civil War, Syracuse grew as an industrial powerhouse with businesses like Crucible Steel and typewriter giant Smith Corona.
