Santa Paula is a city in Ventura County, California. Situated amid the orchards of the Santa Clara River Valley, the city advertises itself to tourists as the "Citrus Capital of the World". Located near the Conejo Valley, the westernmost portion of Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura Metro Area and Los Angeles County, it is also part of a trans-regional urban area with San Francisco, California and San Jose, California.
Santa Paula was one of the early centers of California's petroleum industry. The large Union Oil Company refinery in nearby producted gasoline for California consumers from 1922 until 1993. The Elwood Elementary School District includes Santa Paula Elementary School and Orchard Ranch Elementary School.
The 2010 United States Census reported that Santa Paula had a population of 30,297. The population density was 4,456.5 people per square mile (1,719.6/km²). The racial makeup of Santa Paula was 22,917 (72.8%) White (63% Non-Hispanic White), 1,728 (5.6%) African American, 564 (1.9%) Native American, 932 (2.9%) Asian (1% Filipino), 109 (0.3%) Pacific
In addition to its citrus and petroleum industries, Santa Paula is also known for ranching and agriculture. It is home to a large poultry processing plant run by Foster Farms.
The most prominent feature of Santa Paula is an oil well that can be seen from miles away on clear days—the well produces natural gas from a pool of oil that has not yet been pumped out; it has been burning since 1913.
