Salinas is a city located in Monterey County of California's scenic Central Coast region. With over 150,000 residents, it is the most populous city in the county and a major agricultural hub. Salinas is situated just inland from the Monterey Bay.
History
Indigenous Rumsen Ohlone people originally inhabited the Salinas Valley before Spanish colonization began in the late 1700s. American settlers later established a township called Salinas City in the mid 1800s to serve the growing ranching and farming communities.
Salinas was officially incorporated as a California city in 1874. It emerged as a thriving agricultural center thanks to the fertile valley soil and productive farmland.
Agriculture and Industry
Today, Salinas remains dedicated to its agricultural roots. The surrounding Salinas Valley is often called the “Salad Bowl of the World” for producing lettuce, strawberries, broccoli and other crops.
Major employers in Salinas include Taylor Farms, Tanimura & Antle, and D’Arrigo Brothers. Food processing accounts for over a third of jobs.
