Hillsville was founded in 1842 and named for Daniel Hill, who owned a large tract of land there. Hillsville was incorporated as a town in 1854 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly.
The town is located near the center of Carroll County at (37.393061, -79.836122). It is situated on the eastern slopes of Allegheny Mountain at an elevation of 767 meters (2,526 feet) above sea level.
