Carbondale is a city located in the county of Jackson in the U.S. state of Illinois. Its population at the 2010 census was 25,902 and a population density of 566 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 25,036 inhabitants.
The city was created 174 years ago in 1851.
Carbondale is a city in Jackson and Williamson Counties, Illinois, United States, within the Southern Illinois region informally known as "Little Egypt". The city developed from 1853 because of the stimulation of railroad construction into the area.
The city's population was 25,400 at the 2010 census. Carbondale is located at the southern edge of the Shawnee National Forest and includes part of Giant City State Park. It is named for its location in a valley surrounded by hills and bluffs carved by previous glaciers.
Even though Carbondale has a small population, it has a lot of things to offer. It is home to Southern Illinois University and was named an All-America City in 2001 by the National Civic League. The city is home to two universities, Southern Illinois University and Black Hawk College.
