Battle Creek was first settled in the 1830s and incorporated as a city in 1859. It was named for a skirmish between a government land survey party and Native Americans nearby a creek.
The area was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Sojourner Truth delivered her famous "Ain't I a Woman" speech in Battle Creek in 1851.
