The city was created 338 years ago in 1685.
Albany is the capital of New York State and the county seat of Albany County. The area was originally inhabited by the Algonquian tribe before being settled by the Dutch in 1614.
In 1624 it was established as a fur trading post called Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took control and renamed it Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany.
In 1797, Albany was officially chartered as a city. Its location along the Hudson River allowed it to grow as an important transportation, trade and commerce hub.
Albany later became an industrial center, with ironworks, textiles, and lumber. As the state capital since 1797, Albany emerged as a center of political power and influence.
