Vanderburgh County in southwestern Indiana is home to the city of Evansville, the county seat and third largest city in the state. Beyond Evansville, Vanderburgh County contains a number of smaller towns and communities, each with their own unique history and identity.

The town of Darmstadt north of Evansville was first settled by German immigrants in the 1840s. Many of the original settlers were intellectuals who fled Germany after the failed liberal revolutions. The German heritage is still evident today in the architecture and annual Schweizer Fest celebration.

To the west along the Ohio River lies the towns of Newburgh and Chandler, which originated as river ports and trading posts. Downtown Newburgh has maintained its historical 19th century charm, with several antique shops located in original brick storefronts.

On the south side of Evansville sits the village of Burdette Park, home to the popular summer amusement park also called Burdette Park. Burdette features water slides, miniature golf, and a zoo with exotic animals and reptiles.
