Sitting in the New River Valley of southwest Virginia, Montgomery County contains several small towns steeped in pioneer history and Appalachian culture. The county seat, Christiansburg, is home to the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center. The town boasts historic buildings like the Christiansburg Depot and Aquatic Center recreational area.

Just southwest lies Blacksburg, dominated by the campus of Virginia Tech but also containing dining and shops around Main Street. Further west, the tiny village of Riner is centered around the chestnut-shaded Riner General Store, in business since 1913. The mountain town of Floyd, known for its music scene, sits atop the Blue Ridge Plateau.

In the north, Shawsville and Elliston retain their railroad and coal mining history. Belview and Merrimac scatter across the scenic farmland and mountain foothills of northern Montgomery County. Though small in size, Montgomery County's towns each celebrate Southwest Virginia's heritage from the Appalachian mountains to the New River Valley.
