The city was created 175 years ago in 1848.

Cedar Rapids was established in 1838 along the Cedar River and incorporated as a city in 1849. It was originally called Rapids City but was soon renamed Cedar Rapids.

The city's location near fast-moving water allowed it to become a center for flour and oat milling. Other industries like meatpacking, ready-mix concrete and farm equipment also drove Cedar Rapids' growth in the late 1800s.
