After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 57,805 inhabitants. Its county seat is Palestine. The county was created 178 years ago in 1846.

History

Early days

The county was created in 1846 and organized the following year. It was named after Kenneth L. Anderson, the last vice president of the Republic of Texas. Palestine became the county seat in 1848. The early settlers were mostly farmers and ranchers.

Growth in the 1900s

In the early 1900s, the economy shifted as oil and gas production became a major industry in Anderson County, especially after the discovery of the Black Diamond oil field. The population grew moderately through the mid 1900s.
